The Strathmore Speakers Series and Onondaga Free Library’s November 2021 featured Syracuse University iSchool professor and scholar of social media and online interaction, Jennifer Stromer-Galley. Social media provides a ready vector for disinformation, from simple half-truths to full on conspiracy theories. Frequently, the target of this deceit is the American political system, and as was witnessed in the 2020 presidential campaign, its impact can be wide-ranging and gravely consequential. In this talk, Professor Stromer-Galley examined at the interaction of disinformation, advertising, and presidential politics as it played out on Facebook during and after the 2020 election.

About Jennifer Stromer-Galley

Jennifer Stromer-Galley is Professor in the School of Information Studies, Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, and former Director for the Center for Computational and Data Science at Syracuse University. She is an affiliated faculty member with the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies and with the Department of Political Science. She has published over 50 journal articles, proceedings, and book chapters. Her award-winning book, Presidential Campaigning in the Internet Age (Oxford University Press), provides a history of presidential campaigns as they have adopted and adapted to digital communication technologies.
